Ateneo, La Salle still perfect

MANILA, Philippines - Defending champion Ateneo and De La Salle, pulling away from the rest of the field, hammered out straight sets wins to stay perfect in the UAAP Season 77 women’s volleyball tournament yesterday at The Arena in San Juan.

The Lady Eagles capped a rousing year with a 25-21, 25-13, 25-19 triumph over University of Santo Tomas, while Ara Galang and Cyd Demecillo combined for 30 hits as the Lady Spikers downed a game University of the Philippines side, 25-16, 25-20, 25-21.

Ateneo and La Salle rose to 4-0 to remain on top of the standings.

The Lady Eagles battled toe to toe with the Tigresses in the opening frame before prevailing and coasting along in the next two, with reigning MVP Alyssa Valdez leading the way with 22 hits and four digs.

The core of Ateneo team will fly today for Palembang, Indonesia to compete in the binnenial meet for the region’s student-athletes as representatives for Team UAAP-Philippines.

 In men’s play, Fauzi Ismail fired 22 hits,while Edwin Tolentino had four blocks to finish with 21 points as defending champion National U outlasted UST, 25-22, 25-20, 23-25, 27-29, 15-5, to improve to 4-0. Ateneo ended a two-game slide with a 25-17, 25-18, 25-23 decision of UP.

Galang tallied 16 spikes, three blocks and a service ace, while Demecillo scored all but one of her 10 points from attacks for the Lady Spikers.
