Elorde kayoes Indonesian foe

MANILA, Philippines - Juan Miguel Elorde made short work of Indonesian Oke Haryanto, putting him out with a one-punch knockout in the first round of their scheduled 10-round featherweight clash at the Grand Ballroom of the Elorde Sports Center in Sucat, Parañaque last weekend.

The grandson of the late boxing great Gabriel “Flash” Elorde unleashed a right straight to the chin of Haryanto, sending the stunned Indonesian to the canvas 46 seconds into the opening round to the surprise of the big crowd that included grandmother and the Flash widow Laura Elorde.

“I prepared hard for this fight but I was not expecting to finish this fast,” said the 28-year-old Elorde.

It was the younger Elorde’s fifth straight triumph via the short route and raised his record to 17 wins (including nine KOs) against one loss.

A dazed Haryanto stayed on the floor for about five minutes then later said through an interpreter that he didn’t know what hit him. It was his fourth loss against seven wins and one draw.

Parañaque Mayor Edwin Olivarez and Rep. Erwin Olivarez awarded the trophy to Elorde in the boxing card promoted by Johnny Elorde Management International in cooperation with the Rotary Club of Manila 101.

Fighting out of the Johnny Elorde boxing stable, Giemel Magramo, son of former world flyweight contender Melvin Magramo, recorded his 12th straight win by stopping Ruther del Castillo in the sixth round of their scheduled 10-round flyweight encounter.

Promoter Johnny Elorde said that his eldest son, Juan Martin, was supposed to stake his World Boxing Organization Asia-Pacific super featherweight title against a Japanese contender in the main event, but was forced to reset the bout when the boxer fell ill the previous week.

“We hope to reschedule this title fight early next year when Bai (Juan Martin’s nickname) has fully recovered,” he said.

In other results, Jestoni Autida won by majority decision over Jeffrey Francisco; Joe Misako and Jay Loto beat Pablito Canada and Ryan Bajala, respectively, via unanimous decisions; Raymond Young whipped Avelino Ramos via a TKO in the third round, while Wilbert Berondo fashioned out a unanimous decision over Ernie Mino Jr.

Marlon Paniamogan also scored a TKO in the first round against Jerry Salvo while Glen Medura and Albert Pentecostes fought for a majority draw and Arvin Yurong won by TKO in the first round over Jake Baylon.
