MANILA, Philippines - A fire broke out at the pencak silat gym inside the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex early yesterday, gutting the entire training area and all the training equipment of the athletes’ quarters.
According to reports obtained by Philippine Sports Commission executive director Guillermo Iroy, the fire broke out at around 1 a.m. at the pencak silat gym.
Maintenance personnel and coaches from the nearby boxing gym noticed the smoke and immediately alerted authorities.
No one in the gym was hurt as the fire happened at a time the pencak silat athletes were in Baguio for training.
“The entire pencak silat gym was gutted, destroying the training equipment. Fortunately, the fire didn’t spread out to the nearby boxing gym,” said Iroy.
He said he has ordered an inventory of the equipment in that gym to get a clearer estimate of the cost of the damage.
“The Bureau of Fire is already investigating this and we’re awaiting the result of their investigation,” said Iroy.
