MANILA, Philippines – A close associate of Floyd Mayweather Jr. claims the boxer wants to fight Manny Pacquiao in what could go down as the richest fight in boxing history.
In an interview with Ryan Sandoval of FightHype.com, Sam Watson, Mayweather’s longtime adviser, said the undefeated American desires the showdown as much as Pacquiao does.
“Floyd wants to fight Manny Pacquiao real bad,” Watson said.
“That’s all Floyd’s been talking about is fighting Manny Pacquiao. So once the deal is set and done, you’ll see the biggest fight you ever saw in your life,” he added.
Pacquiao is fresh from a 12-round destruction of American Chris Algieri in Macau last week and has been very vocal about fighting Mayweather next.
Watson said Mayweather shares the same sentiment, even seeing the two fighters facing off twice next year.
“I believe there’s going to be two fights next year,” he continued.
“This is the biggest fight ever. (Mike) Tyson and (Evander) Holyfield was big, Tyson and Lennox Lewis was big, Mayweather and Canelo (Alvarez) was big, but this (Mayweather-Pacquiao fight) would be the biggest fight ever…ever!”
It’s rare hearing someone in the Mayweather camp talking about the boxer’s willingness to take on Pacquiao, who many believe has the tools to give Mayweather his first loss in 47 fights.
Watson, for his part, sees a great match-up.
“Floyd is ready. Floyd really wants this fight. Floyd tells me every day that he wants that fight. So now he’s finally speaking out on it and I hope we get it,” he said.
“It’s going to be a great fight Pacquiao’s going to hit him too. Pacquiao’s going to hit him just like (Miguel) Cotto hit him. It’s going to be a real fight," the boxing adviser added. – Dino Maragay
