Petecio yields to Russian, blows Aiba World gold bid

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Nesthy Petecio fell short of her gold medal bid in the AIBA World Women’s Championships, dropping a close decision to Russian Zinaida Dobrynina in the featherweight finals at Jeju Island, South Korea Monday.

Petecio slugged it out with Dobrynina from the opening bell, connecting with combinations to the head and body. But the taller Russian fighter stood her ground and fended off the Filipinas’ charge in the last two rounds to score a 38-38, 39-37 and 39-37.

“She could also hit hard but I also hit her. I don’t think she dominated me, but that was the decision and we have to respect it,” said Petecio.

Despite the loss, ABAP president Ricky Vargas expressed his satisfaction over Petecio’s silver medal finish.

“This was a strong tournament with the best women boxers from 67 countries and we were one of only 12 nations in the finals. I am proud of Nesthy,” said Vargas, also the president of Maynilad Water.

“Nesthy’s performance inspires us to continue our program of talent identification, training and international exposure for both our men and women boxers. We owe it to these dedicated athletes who sacrifice so much for the country,” he added.

The women’s team trip was supported by the Philippine Sports Commission, PLDT and Maynilad. Uniforms were provided by Pride Sports Apparel.

The other members of the squad were Josie Gabuco and Irish Magno, coaches Roel Velasco and Violito Payla.
