Altas post 50th straight NCAA volleyball win
MANILA, Philippines - Perpetual Help overpowered Letran, 25-20, 25-20, 25-20, yesterday to post its 50th straight victory in NCAA men’s volleyball at The Arena in San Juan City.
Rey Taneo, Allan Jay Sala-An and Neil Barry Ytorzaita alternated in dealing the critical blows and combined for 35 hits including 30 on attacks to extend their amazing streak to 50 spanning four years.
Perpetual Help coach Sammy Acaylar, however, stressed they’re more concerned in winning their fifth straight championship than the streak.
“Streak or no streak, our goal is to win the championship,” said Acaylar in Filipino.
Emilio Aguinaldo College joined Perpetual Help at the helm after posting its third straight victory with a 25-12, 25-17, 25-19, over Jose Rizal.
Power-hitting Howard Mojica continued to display impressive form by unloading 17 hits including 14 on kills.
In women’s action, reigning three-peat champion Perpetual Help turned back Letran, 25-21, 25-17, 27-25, to grab the solo lead with a 3-0 slate.
Ana James Diocareza led all hitters with 19 while Ma. Lourdes Clemente and Shyrra Cabriana scattered 14 and 10, respectively.
Jose Rizal edged EAC, 25-22, 13-25, 25-22, 20-25, 15-12, to improve to a 2-1 card.
