CEU annexes fourth straight WNCAA title

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Centro Escolar University bagged its fourth straight seniors crown via a two-game sweep while De La Salle Zobel and Chiang Kai Shek both moved a win away from retaining their respective division titles in the 45th WNCAA basketball tournament at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum last Sunday.

CEU nipped Rizal Technological University, 64-62, in the seniors level with star player Janine Pontejos taking home a third consecutive Most Valuable Player award. The Lady Scorpions also took Game 1, 66-56, last Sept. 28.

San Beda College Alabang wound up third after finishing the elimination round with a 4-2 card and losing to second-ranked RTU in the semifinals, 77-57.

CEU also beat RTU, 2-0, in the senior futsal finals last week. RTU was the champion for the past four seasons.

In the midgets division, defending champion DLSZ blasted St. Stephen’s High School, 41-17, while defending junior champion CKSC slipped past host La Salle College Antipolo, 54-50, in the league backed by Mikasa, Molten, OneA Bed and Breakfast, Goody, Monster Radio RX 93.1 and AksyonTV.
