Koreans oust Gonzales-Huey pair in Asiad tennis doubles

Alder Almo - The Philippine Star

INCHEON, South Korea – Ruben Gonzales, Jr. and Treat Huey were unceremoniously booted out in the men's doubles tennis Saturday at the Yeorumul Tennis Courts here.

Gonzales and Huey, the second seed in the tournament, fell to no. 8 seed Hyeon Chung and Lim Youngkyu of Korea in the quarterfinals in a shocking straight set loss, 6-0, 6-3.

With the crowd behind the Koreans, Gonzales and Huey were not able to get their game going in the opening set.

"I don't know if we played that bad or if they played that good. I'm disappointed," Huey said after the match.

They were completely outclassed by Korea's top two singles players.

Huey and Gonzales let out a big sigh when they scored their first point of the match, tying the second set at 1 apiece and tried to make a game out of it. The dominant Korean crowd jeered them.

Chung and Lim, ranked 183 and 402, respectively in the ATP, seized the lead, 4-3, as Gonzales and Huey squandered a 40-15 advantage.

"I'm really disappointed. We were hoping to win a medal. But it's a learning experience for us. There's a lot more to improve on," said Gonzales, whose parents came all the way from Indianapolis, USA to watch him throughout the tournament.

The loss kept Phl out of the medal round in Tennis.
