The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Lyceum-Cavite pulled away in the Seniors division while La Salle-Zobel rallied to seize the lead in Midgets 1 play at resumption of the weather-disrupted ICTSI-JGFP Inter-School golf championships in various courses recently.

At the Eastridge Golf Club in Binangonan, Rizal, national team mainstay Rupert Zaragosa combined with Gilbert Gamolo and Janzen Morilla to hold off La Salle-Taft, pooling a 136 for a 36-hole total of 300. Eric Gallardo, AR Ramos and Miggy Yee combined for 132 for 272.

Zaragosa, who set a jungolf record of 10-under 64 gross in the first round, matched the 38 of Gamolo in his last warm-up game before he left for the Incheon Asian Games while Morilla added 47.

As the weather improved after consecutive weeks of cancellations due to rains, La Salle Zobel’s Ira Alido, Philippe Palanca and Jolo Magcalayo seized the chance to rout erstwhile leader Ateneo by 27 points and emerge the new frontrunner in Midgets 1 action held at the Eagle Ridge Golf and Country Club in Gen. Trias, Cavite of the tourney sponsored by the ICTSI Foundation. The other sponsors are the Philippine Golf Foundation, Golf Depot, Martin Lorenzo and Inquirer Golf.

Alido fired 54 to lead scoring anew for La Salle Zobel, Palanca added 51 and Magcalayo chipped in 44 that gave the Greenies a 451 total for 54 holes.

Ateneo slumped to its worst showing in three rounds as Aidric Chan (43) and Carl Jano Corpus (42) and Riggs Illescas (37) could only manage 122 for a 442 total. Ateneo 2 was a far third at 331, LSGH at 325, Xavier 1 at 254, Ateneo 3 at 180, La Salle Greenhills 2 at 150 and Ateneo 4 at 37.

College of St. Benilde was running third in seniors action with a 254, Ateneo 1 followed at 246, Ateneo 2 at 224 and Ateneo 3 at 233.

Zaragosa (112) maintained a six-point lead over national teammate Justin Quiban (106) with Gamolo in third at 101 in the seniors individual category. Alido, meanwhile, edged out Chan for the Midgets top spot, 160-155, with Palanca at 146.
