Gan, Tan top WW 14th Pres Cup

MANILA, Philippines - Oliver Gan flashed top form and shot a gross 65 to capture the overall crown while Bayani Tan topped Group I and Perry Pe dominated Group II in the 14th President’s Cup at Wack Wack Golf and Country Club in Mandaluyong City recently.

Gan, a mainstay of Wack Wack team in various club competitions, turned in a solid game all day to run away with the top honors in the 18-hole tournament, Wack Wack’s signature event held in honor of WW president Ben Abalos.

Tan carded a gross 85 for a net 70.6 under the Modified Double Peoria scoring system, nipping Takanubo Taira, who had a gross 75 and net 71.4, and Charlie Carmona, who had a net 71.8 from a gross 79, for the Group I crown.

Pe, on the other hand, churned out a net 72 from a gross 96 to frustrate Martin DyBuncio, who had a gross 93 and a net 73.8, and Samuel Tiu, who had a net 74.2 from a gross 91, for the Group II plum in the event backed by Platinum sponsors Mizuno Sports Corp., DDT Construct and Glenlivet.

Andrew Tan carded a gross 106 for a net 73.6 as he copped the Group III crown over Andy Co, who had a gross 98 and a net 76.4. Co nipped Gene Arbatin, who had a gross 104, in the countback for runner-up honors in the tournament sponsored by Macro Funders and Dev’t Corp, St. Francis Square Dev’t Corp, Excellent Golfing Partners Inc., Unilever, Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corp. and Philippine Airlines.  

Cesar Quiambao carded a gross 85 for a net 71.8 then edged Buddy Velayo, who turned in the same score, in the countback to snare the Seniors division crown. Sonny Go placed third with a gross 84 for a net 72.

Jay Crisologo put in a gross 94 for a net 73.6 to foil Charlene Abalos, who had a net 74.8 from a gross 88, and Andrea DyBuncio, who had a gross 92 for a net 75.2, for the Group I title in the ladies division while Deena Mendiola topped Group II with a gross 103 for a net 76.6, beating Mabek Kawsek, who had a net 77.8 from a gross 109, and Hanne See, who had a gross 103 for a net 79.

Ariel Javelosa topped the guest category with a net 72 from a gross 90, edging Edmund Lee, who had a gross 82 and a net 72.4, and Efren Alvez, who had a net 73, in the even backed by hole-in-one sponsors CATS Motors, Toyota North Edsa, Ford Balintawak, AutoHub Group and Texas Eagle Golf Cart.
