Mayweather vs Pacman: Will it ever happen?

MANILA, Philippines - When people start talking about the elusive fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao it’s hard to talk about anything else.

Only last week, Mayweather defeated Marcos Maidana in their rematch in Las Vegas, and the 37-year-old American stretched his record to 47-0.

In November, Pacquiao will return to Macau to take on the unbeaten Chris Algieri for the Filipino’s WBO welterweight crown.

Promoters are trying hard to sell the next Pacquiao fight but in the process they always end up selling Pacquiao vs Mayweather.

Boxing websites never run out of stories about boxing’s biggest fight that has yet to happen. The big question is will it ever happen?

You hear different versions here and there.

Pacquiao said a million times he would fight Mayweather under any or all conditions, and just recently he told Mayweather to stop “blabbing” and get the fight done.

Mayweather, just moments after beating Maidana, spoke of the fight, and said he would do it “if the fight presents itself.”

It must have been the heat of the moment or a slip of the tongue because the past few days, the flamboyant boxer was singing a different tune.

Mayweather recently told ESPN UK the other day that the fight will only happen if it’s on Showtime and if under Mayweather Promotions.

What this means is that HBO and Top Rank Promotions would have nothing to do with the fight when Top Rank chief Bob Arum said recently that Showtime and HBO are working together to make the fight happen.

But if Mayweather insists on his latest demand, then, again, there goes the fight.

Everybody, except Mayweather it seems, wants the fight to happen.

Last May, just after Mayweather beat Maidana the first time, Muhammad Ali congratulated his fellow American through his Twitter account.

“Congratulations. Maybe after you rest up we can see you rumble with @MannyPacquiao,” said Ali.

The following day, Pacquiao called Ali as “The Greatest.”

Of course, what Ali wanted didn’t happen, because Mayweather opted for a rematch with Maidana, and Pacquiao ended up signing a contract to fight Algieri.

Someone did his math, and said Mayweather made $14,800 (roughly P643,000) per second inside the ring last Sunday.

He can earn as much or at least close to it without having to fight Pacquiao next.

Yesterday, Fight Guru, one of the boxing websites, retweeted a very short message from the former undisputed middleweight champion of the world, Marvelous Marvin Hagler.

“Great fighter (Mayweather). But it’s time to fight against Pacquiao,” said Hagler.

Is Mayweather listening?
