San Beda, RTU seal WNC volley finals
MANILA, Philippines - Defending champion San Beda College Alabang and Rizal Technological University turned back their respective semifinal rivals to seal a showdown for the seniors volleyball crown in the 45th WNCAA tournament at St. Scholastica’s College gym over the weekend.
San Beda, which swept all its seven matches in the elims, repulsed No. 4 Philippine Women’s University, 24-26, 25-14, 25-20, 25-20, while RTU downed 43rd season champion and third-ranked Centro Escolar University, 23-25, 25-19, 25-12, 25-22.
The best-of-three finals will start Sunday at 5 p.m., also at the St. Scholastica gym.
Game 1 of the senior basketball finals between three-time defending champion CEU and RTU has been moved to Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum after power failure hit RMC last Sunday.
Miriam College and St. Scholastica share the Junior A lead at 4-0 after beating St. Jude Catholic School (25-11, 25-22, 25-15) and Angelicum College (25-11, 25-19, 25-11), respectively. Defending champion De La Salle Zobel paces Junior B at 3-0, with Assumption College as its latest victim, 25-13, 25-13, 25-16.
Miriam is likewise ahead in the midgets division, in a tie with Poveda at 5-1, after beating Assumption, 25-10, 25-14. St. Paul College Pasig dealt Poveda its first defeat, 22-25, 25-19, 25-19, for a 3-3 slate.
In junior basketball, host La Salle College Antipolo and defending champion Chiang Kai Shek swept the five-game elimination round of Junior A and B, respectively, to gain the top seedings in the crossover quarterfinal on Sunday at CKSC gym.
LSCA whipped St. Jude, 92-37, and will face St. Stephen’s High School in the final eight while CKSC dominated San Beda, 63-35, to set up a clash with St. Paul.
Other quarterfinal pairings are Miriam versus Assumption and Angelicum against DLSZ. Miriam and DLSZ both wound up second with 4-1 slates.
