MANILA, Philippines - Jopet Quiro scored 25 points, including the game winner, as Rizal Technological University held off Philippine School of Business Administration, 87-86, in overtime yesterday in the 13th Universities and Colleges Athletic Association (UCAA) men’s basketball tournament.
Quiro’s driving layup in the last 10.7 seconds proved to be the winning basket for the RTU Blue Thunder, who went on to post their fourth win in five games at the Central Colleges of the Philippines gymnasium in Sta. Mesa, Manila.
The Blue Thunder now share the lead at the end of the first round with the Trinity University of Asia Stallions, who won over Manuel L. Quezon University, 77-73.
Rodel Matias fired 19 points for the Stallions, who leaned on two charities from Edwin Reyes in the last five seconds to beat MLQU.
Aries Dionisio led the PSBA Jaguars with 36 points, including a driving shot with six seconds left that sent the match into an extra five minutes, 78-all. Dionisio had a chance to win it for the Jaguars but he missed a pressure-laden basket as time expired in overtime.
