Roach open to Pacquiao-Khan fight
MANILA, Philippines - Freddie Roach, who in the past had trained British fighter Amir Khan, has no problem pitting Manny Pacquiao against him in the future.
Khan had been very vocal about his desire to face Pacquiao, who is set to take on American Chris Algieri on Nov. 23 in Macau.
Roach says Khan might get his wish.
“(A fight between Pacquiao and Khan) could possibly happen,” the bespectacled trainer said in a report by Phil Jay of World Boxing News.
Khan, a former Olympic medalist, is still shopping for an opponent for a planned fight in December. He is eyeing either Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr., but the two stars are already booked for their respective fights.
Mayweather will clash with Marcos Maidana in a rematch next month.
Khan, for his part, earlier said he thinks fighting Pacquiao would be tougher than Mayweather.
The former lightweight titlist used to spar with Pacquiao, even flying to the Philippines before to train with the Filipino icon.
Roach knows Khan too well that he’s confident his prized ward Pacquiao will beat him.
“Manny’s had him (Khan) down a couple of times in here (Wild Card Gym) and I have no problem with that fight. I would take that fight in a second,” Roach ended.
