MANILA, Philippines - Team Philippines made its biggest haul of four titles in the Veritas World Junior Golf Championships held in various courses in Los Angeles, California recently with Harmie Nicole Constantino, Carl Jano Corpus, Annyka Chanel Cayabyab and Andrew Chua topping their respective divisions in impressive fashions.
Constantino led a 1-2-3 finish by Philippine bets in the girls 13 years division at the Brookside Golf Club-Koiner with three success sub-par rounds of 72, 70, 71 for a 213 total and a 14-stroke romp that highlighted the campaign of kids sent to the competition by the Junior Golf Foundation of the Philippines.
Corpus survived a second round meltdown with a closing 68 to top the boys 12 years event at Brookside Golf Club-Koiner by three with a 217 total.
Pineda claimed the girls 10 years by 10 strokes with her 69-80-75-224 at the Brookside Golf Club-E.O. Nay.
Chua snared his first major international title with his 9-hole scores of 37-35-35-107 also at Brookside Golf Club-E.O. Nay to top the boys 7 years bracket by six strokes.
Team Phl also posted five runner-up finishes through Annika Bianca Cedo (girls 15 at Tustin Ranch course), Samantha Green (girls 14 at Tustin Ranch course), Ashia Marie Nocum (girls 13 at Brookside Golf Club-Koiner), Raymart Tolentino (boys 17 at Tustin Ranch course) and Richnell Albano (boys 14 at Tustin Ranch course) to emerge the most dominant foreign team in the multi-nation competition.
Sam Andrea Martirez (girls 16), Kyla Nocum (girls 13), Josh Jorge (boys 11), Sean Granada (boys 9) turned in third place finishes. Abby Arevalo (girls 16), Joshua Cole Cruz (boys 6) and Miko Granada (boys 6) chalked up fourth place finishes. Joaquin Arenas (boys 7) and Zachary Castro (boys 8) complete the roster of trophy winners for Team Philippines.
“That was quite a big statement made by our junior golfers and it’s a reward for their hard work at home. We hope to do even better in the coming years,” said JGFP president Luigi Tabuena of the Filipino golfers’ dominating performance.
