Foreign jr fencers vie in ‘Next Generation’ tilt

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - A crack junior international cast toughens up the field in the first Next Generation Fencing Championship which unfolds this weekend at the Meralco Multi-Purpose Hall in Pasig City.

Fencers from top clubs in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand have confirmed participation in the two-day event, which features the individual and team categories for 15-years-old and-below. Events on tap are the foil, epee and sabre.

Top fencers from UAAP member schools and those from Xavier School and St. Jude Catholic School will lead the local challenge in the event sanctioned by the Philippine Fencing Association.

“We are excited to stage this age-group international fencing tourney and are thankful for the support of our foreign guests who are coming to participate,” said chief organizer Amatov Canlas of Fencing Masters Philippines. “We hope to make this an annual event since it gives much-needed exposure to our local fencers and will help determine who will be the ‘next generation’ national-team caliber players.”

PFA current president Richard Gomez has expressed his full support for the event sponsored by Akari Lighting Systems, Bench apparel, Chikka.com, Fruits in Ice Cream and equipment supplier Vicious Brainiac Fencing.
