3 teams stay unbeaten in women’s caging

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Defending champion La Salle and last year’s runner-up National University notched their second straight victories while Ateneo matched the two fancied bets’ hot start for a three-way tie for the lead in the UAAP Season 77 women’s basketball tournament at the Blue Eagle Gym over the weekend.

Camille Claro and Ana Castillo combined for 16 points as the Lady Archers trounced the Adamson Lady Falcons, 50-42, while the Lady Bulldogs, behind Trixie Antiquiera’s 15-point effort, nosed out the University of Santo Tomas Tigresses, 62-60.

Last season’s Mythical Team member Danica Jose came away with a double-double of 22 points and 13 rebounds as the Lady Eagles edged the Far Eastern U Lady Tams, 58-55, to go 2-0 under new coach Erika Dy.

In the other women’s match, Ruthlaine Tacula shot 16 points as University of the East barged into the win column with a 58-47 victory over University of the Philippines.

The Lady Warriors thus moved in a tie with the Lady Tams at 1-1, while the Lady Falcons, Tigresses and Lady Maroons dropped to 0-2.

Meanwhile, the opening of this season’s UAAP high school volleyball tournament will be held Saturday, according to event host Adamson University.

The competitions in the girls and boys divisions were originally scheduled to open last weekend but were called off due to the unavailability of Adamson gym.
