MANILA, Philippines — Germany's latest football hero Mario Götze, who scored the stunning, winning goal that made the country World Cup champion, supported work for children in the Philippines.

Plan International, which has a Philippine arm, announced on Monday that Götze has served as the organization's ambassador besides being an attacking midfielder for Bayern Munich and training with the German national team.

"You'll be glad to know he's a true champion on and off the field," Plan International Philippines said in a post. "Mario is a proud Plan ambassador supporting our work for children in Plan countries - including the Philippines!"

Götze also worked with Plan in projects for Nepal and Brazil.

Argentina succumbed to a late goal Sunday from Gotze in the World Cup finals match in Rio de Janeiro.

"You just shoot that goal in, you don't really know what's happening," Gotze said. "And then at the end of the match, having a party with the team, the whole country ... it is for us, a dream come true." - with the Associated press
