Donaire, Vetyeka ready for showdown

Dino Maragay - The Philippine Star

MACAU – Things went smoothly at the scales for Nonito Donaire Jr. and WBA featherweight champion Simpiwe Vetyeka, both primed for their duel on Saturday at the Cotai Arena of the Venetian Resort here.

The two fighters successfully made the featherweight limit at the official weigh-in ceremony Friday at the Bellini Lounge, where a handful of local and international media members and fans showed up.

Donaire, sporting a red jacket with matching red jogging pants, was the first to hit the scales. He tipped in at 126 pounds – right on the dot for featherweight – and thereby quashed claims that he’d been struggling to make weight.

Vetyeka, for his part, weighed 125.5 pounds or half a pound lighter than the limit.

It’s all systems go for both boxers, who are expected to rehydrate and regain some pounds heading to Saturday’s fight.

After posing for the customary face-off shots, Donaire declared his readiness for the fight, where he will be gunning for a fifth world title in as many divisions.

He stressed it’s a must-win situation for him.

“Every fight is a must-win. This is where it starts,” said Donaire.

Vetyeka likewise brimmed in confidence, vowing to defend the title he seized from longtime champion Chris John in a career-defining victory.

''I believe in myself very much. I'm ready for Donaire,'' the South African said.
