Vetyeka: ‘Fighting Donaire is my biggest motivation’

Dino Maragay - The Philippine Star

MACAU – WBA featherweight champion Simpiwe Vetyeka has acknowledged the fact that he’s facing a big-time opponent in Nonito Donaire Jr.

This, the South African stressed, will serve as his motivation in defending his title against Donaire on Saturday at the Cotai Arena of the Venetian Resort here in this bustling city.

Speaking to a handful of Filipino scribes in the middle of a workout on Wednesday, Vetyeka expressed confidence in defending the crown he took from longtime champion Chris John in what turned out to be the biggest win of his career.

â€œFacing Donaire is the biggest motivation because in boxing, he's bigger than me. But I'm the champion now and I will extend my title (reign),” he said, well aware of the multiple titles Donaire won in different weight classes.

Vetyeka’s purse for the Donaire fight wasn’t disclosed, but reports said the champion will earn no less than 1 million rand, which is equivalent to about $95,000.

But Vetyeka insists it’s not about money, as beating Donaire will open more doors for him.

“Financially I don’t think anyone can get enough of money,” he added.

Vetyeka (26-2, with 16 KOs) then went on to say he’s got all bases covered against Donaire, adding he’s wary of the Filipino-American’s left hook.

“He's got a powerful left hook. I'm sure he'll want to use it but I have a plan for that. And I have my right (hand) also,” he further said.

“I'm prepared for anything that comes. If he's not ready to go 12 rounds, that means I'll knock him out. But if he's ready, I can win on points,” Vetyeka ended.
