Adamson gains Freego Cup quarters

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Ateneo bounced back from a shock defeat to Mapua by downing La Salle-Zobel, 81-74, even as Adamson clinched a quarterfinal berth with a 77-59 rout of San Sebastian in the PCABL (Philippine Chinese Amateur Basketball League) seventh Freego Cup at the Phil. Buddhacare Academy gym in QC over the weekend.

With Matt Nieto exploding for 21 points, the Eaglets outlasted the Junior Archers to close out their elimination campaign in Group B at 5-1.

Dale Termoso and Mike Nieto also scored 11 points each as the Eaglets redeemed themselves from a 74-65 defeat to the Robins last Tuesday.

Alfred Sahulga had 26 points for the Junior Archers, who absorbed their third straight loss after a 2-0 start in the event presented by Freego.

The Baby Falcons, behind Miguel Sasuman and JD Tungcab, trounced the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Staglets to join Mapua and Ateneo in the next round.

Adamson finished the elims of the tournament also sponsored by Smart Telecom, Fresh Gear (FG), Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, Colt Commercial, K Tech Sports, Insular Square of Cebu and Cebu Pioneer Auto Supply with a 4-2 card.

Drawing another inspired performance from Fran Yu, Jonas Tibayan and Moh Ascaño, Chiang Kai Shek College demolished Lyceum 84-59, to stay unbeaten in five games in Group A.

Mapua still leads the group with a 5-0 record while the loss put La Salle’s quarterfinal bid in peril.
