Carlos, Hoey enter US Open qualifier final leg

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Jobim Carlos fired a 68 and Rico Hoey carded a 73 as they made it to the final phase of the US Open Qualifying set June 2 at Lake Merced and Olympia Golf Club in the US.

Carlos, playing out of the University of San Francisco, turned in his four-under card at the Pasatiempo Golf Club in San Francisco while Hoey, who migrated to the US when he was five, booked one of the two spots at the Bermuda Dunes Golf Club.

Carlos and Hoey were members of the national team that posted a 22-stroke romp in last year’s Putra Cup at Sherwood Hills in Cavite.

Only five slots were contested by more than 50 players at Pasatiempo, with Cory McLyea, Carlos’ USF teammate, finishing on top by a shot.

Carlos and Hoey are being supported by the MVPSF, whose vision is to be able to help send a Filipino to the Olympics in golf.

“The MVP Sports Foundation is very happy with the progress and development of Jobim,” said MVPSF president Al Panlilio, who, through the National Golf Association of the Philippines, gave Carlos a scholarship at USF.

“Jobim gives us and the country great pride in this achievement. We wish him more success,” said Panlilio.

The US Open will be held at Pinehurst No. 2, and the final phase of qualifying will be 36 holes set in one day, with Lake Merced to host the first 18 before the field goes to the Olympic, the site of the 2012 Open.
