MANILA, Philippines – Former world champion Marvin Sonsona will get a chance for payback against former tormentor Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. when the two tangle in a rematch on June 7 at the Madison Square Garden in New York City.
This after a fight between the Filipino and the Puerto Rican – which is set at junior featherweight (122 pounds) – has been included in the undercard of the Sergio Martinez-Miguel Cotto showdown.
Sonsona, a former WBO super flyweight titlist, lost by fourth-round knockout to Vasquez in their first meeting in 2010 for the WBO super bantamweight crown. The 23-year-old southpaw from General Santos City has since racked up four straight wins, the last of which was an impressive third-round KO win over Akifumi Shimoda in Macau last February.
Vazquez, for his part, has had a tentative career recently after losses to Jorge Arce in 2011 and Nonito Donaire Jr. in 2012. He is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Guillermo Avila in September last year.
Sonsona (18-1-1, with 15 KOs) and Vazquez (23-3-1, with 19 KOs) will figure in a 10-round bout that is part of the HBO PPV-televised undercard.
