Pacman-Marquez 5 in Macau?

Abac Cordero - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Juan Manuel Marquez’ chief trainer is not closing the door on a fifth fight between the Mexican warrior and Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao.

But Nacho Beristain said if and when it happens he will insist that it takes place outside the United States.

Beristain told www.boxingscene.com that the heavy taxes on foreign boxers fighting in the US would recommend that it happens somewhere else.

There’s Macau, fast emerging as new gambling capital of the world, and where Pacquiao fought Brandon Rios last November.

If Marquez could have his way, he’d like the fight to take place in Mexico. But Pacquiao may insist on a neutral ground, which is Macau.

Beristain is not really pushing a fifth fight between the two arch-rivals but said that if his boxer says “Yes” then he would be there to support him.

“I do not like that fight being made, and least of all in the United States. If that fight takes place in America, they would both walk away with far less money,” said Beristain.

It’s basically the same reason why Pacquiao tried his hand on Macau, where taxes as far lesser than in the United States, which claims close to 40 percent of the boxer’s earnings.

“(T)he US Treasury would take a lot of money. Economically it does not make sense for Juan, at least under the terms they are offering,” said Beristain.

“I already explained my position on that encounter. Now if the promoters convince Juan (to fight Pacquiao), I am there for him,” he told www.boxingscene.com.

For their fourth fight in 2012, which ended in a big knockout win by Marquez, Pacquiao was guaranteed $23 million and the Mexican no less than $6 million.

Immediately after, a fifth fight was sought, and Marquez was offered $12 million. But he declined, saying there was no point of doing a fifth fight.

Marquez ended up fighting Tim Bradley for less, and losing, while Pacquiao ended up beating Rios almost 11 months after his knockout to Marquez.

Marquez will certainly ask for more to face Pacquiao one more time, and this time Beristain wants to make the most out of it.
