David sizzles as Gilas outplays PBA All Stars

Alder Almo - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines -- Gilas Pilipinas flaunted its distinct advantage in chemistry as its outclassed the PBA All Stars, 101-93, Sunday to end the PBA All Star weekend at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Playing for the first time since the silver medal finish at the FIBA Asia last year, Gilas worked in swiss-like precision.

Gilas gunners Gary David and Jeff Chan fueled the offense with combined seven triples as the Nationals led by as many as 18 twice in the exhibition match.

“I’d like to express my appreciation to coach Tim. They (All-Star) defended us well, they kept showing us different looks and they ran some stuff that we’ll be able to see in the international competition,” national coach Chot Reyes said.

Overall, it was a good tuneup game for the FIBA World Cup and Asian Games-bound Nationals, who took home the Php 100,000 prize put up by the PBA Board.

The PBA All Stars made one final push in the final canto using a small lineup to cut the deficit to 10. But Gilas was not to be denied.

David won the MVP award and Php 30,000 cash as the Meralco gunner finished with 15 points on 2-of-3 triples.

The PBA All Stars though did not go home empty-handed after they won the Php 50,000 pot for the dance showdown before the game.

The All Star selection regaled the crowd with "I love Rock & Roll" gig with Mark Barroca wearing a wig lip syncing as vocalist. Joe Devance then showcased his booty shaking skills before winding up the performance with their own "Whoops Kiri" dance routine.

Gilas players were the first to take the floor starting off with their version of "Whoops Kiri" followed by "The Fox" and their finale showcasing Junemar Fajardo in "Let it go" by movie Frozen.
