CEU halts UST, stays unbeaten
MANILA, Philippines - Centro Escolar University demolished University of Santo Tomas, 78-60, in a battle of undefeated teams to move within a win of sweeping the first round of the third Pilipinas Chinese Amateur Basketball League Dickies Women’s Cup held last weekend at the CEU Lumera Tower gym in Legarda.
With Janine Pontejos leading the assault, CEU outscored the Tigresses, 22-11, in the payoff period to extend their winning streak to four games in the tournament presented by Dickies.
The sweet-shooting Pontejos scored five of her 23 points in the fourth to touch off the team’s onslaught that turned what was a close contest into a rout.
Two other CEU players scored in double figures with Folashade Ogunsemoyin knocking down 12 markers aside from dominating the shaded lane.
Far Eastern University finally barged into the win column after three failed attempts by crushing newcomer Fatima, 99-32, in the tournament also supported by Smart Telecom, Jumbo Plastic Linoleum, Power House, CW Home Depot, Dickies Underwear and Hapee Toothpaste.
Meantime, UAAP champion La Salle held sister team College of St. Benilde to just 12 points in the final half to score a runaway 63-39 victory – thanks to the 18-point performance of Nicky Garcia.
Six FEU players tallied double digits with Clare Castro emerging as the top scorer with 24 points as the Lady Tamaraws handed Fatima another crushing defeat.
