The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - UST edged Jose Rizal University-A, 59-56, and nipped the Heavy Bombers for the last quarterfinal berth in the 10th Fr. Martin Cup Collegiate Open basketball tournament at San Beda gym in Mendiola recently.

The Growling Tigers and the Bombers wound up with identical 4-3 (win-loss) records in the elims but the former took the last quarters seat via winner-over-the-other rule.

UST will thus face JRU-B when the quarterfinal round fires off this Saturday at the Arellano U gym in Legarda.

The other quarterfinalists are the University of Perpetual Help-A Altas (7-0), the Lyceum Philippines University-A Pirates (5-2) and the College of

St. Benilde Blazers(5-2).

The Altas will meet the San Beda Red Lions, who placed fourth in Group A with a 5-2 card while JRU-B topped Group A with a 6-1 slate. The Mapua Cardinals and the Ateneo Blue Eagles both had 5-2 marks.

The Cardinals will clash with the LPU-A Pirates at 10:30 a.m. while the Blue Eagles, who booted out the University of Perpetual Help-B, 63-53, take on the CSB Blazers at 12 noon.
In women’s action, Erica Baldonado hit 13 points, and Clare Castro shot 12 markers for the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, who beat the Our Lady of Fatima University Lady Phoenix, 82-36.
