JRU, SSC claim golden athletics feats
MANILA, Philippines - Jose Rizal continued to dominate athletics as Aldrin Rey ruled the 400-meter run even as national team mainstay Mervin Guarte of San Sebastian racked up two gold medals in the 89th NCAA track and field competitions at the La Salle-Dasmariñas grounds in Cavite yesterday.
Rey clocked 49.06 seconds to beat St. Benilde’s Anfernee Lopez and another Jose Rizal bet, Peter Pol Padal, who posted 49.62 and 49.74 seconds, respectively.
Rey’s victory came after Domingo Cabradilla took the long jump gold in Thursday’s opener of the three-day meet, organized by a committee chaired by Paul Supan of Jose Rizal.
Jose Rizal U now has a total of 319 points, moving one day away from nailing its fourth straight seniors crown.
St. Benilde is way behind with 170 points while San Sebastian is in third with 163.
Guarte also hogged the spotlight as the silver medalist in last year’s SEA Games in Myanmar posted impressive times of 1:55.64 and 15:07.67 to cop the gold in the 800m and 5,000m, respectively.
Jose Rizal’s Alvin Castanares and Rudyfer Hernandez took the silver and bronze in the 800m, respectively, while Arellano U’s Immuel Camino and Jose Rizal’s Hernandez bagged the silver and bronze, respectively, in the 5,000m run.
St. Benilde’s Anfernee Lopena ruled the century dash in new meet record of 10.73 seconds, besting teammate Daniel Noal (10.95) and AU’s Rudquiem Maullon (11.02).
