Sonsona back on track after marvelous KO win in Macau

MANILA, Philippines –Marvin “Marvelous” Sonsona got his career right back on track with a sensational third round knockout of former world super bantamweight champion Akifumi “Sugar” Shimoda of Japan last Saturday in Cotai Arena in Venetian, Macao to wrest the WBO international featherweight crown.

Sonsona unleashed a vicious left uppercut that ended the fight in the 1:17 mark of the third round.

The marvelous win in the undercard of the Top Rank-produced Ring of Gold sets him up for a world title shot in the near future.

Philboxing.com reported that Sonsona wants to build on this momentum and take one more fight before gunning for a world title shot.

The General Santos native rose to prominence at the age of 19 when he won the 115-pound world title belt with a decision over Puerto Rican Jose Lopez in 2009.

But Sonsona’s reign was short-lived.

He lost the title after missing weight in his first defense then got knocked out in four rounds in his succeeding fight against Wilfredo Vasquez, Jr. for the vacant WBO junior featherweight title.

He was never the same after that fight until this one.

At 23, Sonsona is believed to have matured and will not let this second chance slip away.
