MANILA, Philippines - Unbeaten San Beda held off Arellano U and hacked out a 2-0 victory to capture the NCAA football crown for the fourth straight year at the ASCOM field in Taguig City yesterday.
The win thus capped the Red Booters’ impressive run that included a sweep of their six first round games and three second round assignments without yielding a single goal.
The title romp was San Beda’s fourth in row and 12th in the last 13 NCAA season.
Rightback Raffy Cabug, a fourth year Marketing major, set the tone with an early goal on the ninth, knocking in an assist from winger Shaun Soberano.
Cabug, who honed his football skills in home province Masbate, also accounted for the other goal on the 69th, converting on a penalty kick after the Arellano goalkeeper attacked Ashley Flores inside the penalty box and was given a yellow card.
Cabug later clinched the Finals MVP trophy while Flores took the Best Striker award. San Beda, backed by brothers Angelo Dwight, Cecilio Jr,, Ricardo and Emmanuel, all SBC alumni, also won the La Liga Championship trophy over St. Benilde last August.
