MANILA, Philippines - Muntinlupa is throwing its all-out support to lone Filipino Winter Games bet Michael Christian Martinez who will slug it out with the cream of the crop in the men’s figure skating event tomorrow.
“We are definitely proud of Michael Christian Martinez. First of all, for making every aspiring Filipino skater’s dream come true – to be in the Olympics,†said Mayor Jaime Fresnedi.
He said he will be carrying the dreams of his fellow Muntinlupeños, in particular, and the Filipinos, in general, in his quest to win the first Olympic gold medal in the Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
“We are even more proud because he represents our city, and we will cheer for him as he fights for every Muntinlupeño and every Filipino on the Olympic stage,†said Fresnedi.
He is scheduled to compete on Friday at 7 p.m. (Manila time).
Martinez is the first Filipino and first from Southeast Asia to compete in the Winter Games – a feat made more extraordinary given the country’s geographical location. He is ranked No. 30 in the world by the International Skating Union.
Martinez will be performing to the love theme of Romeo and Juliet in the short program and the Malaguena in the free skating event.
“We urge every Filipino – in Muntinlupa and outside of our city – to support Michael,†said Fresnedi. “We will be praying and cheering for his success, and we will await his successful return.â€
