Lady Falcons blank Maroons, stay clean

Olmin Leyba - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Rizza Bernardino and Luzviminda Embudo took turns belting solo home runs as rampaging Adamson shut out University of the Philippines, 5-0, to remain spotless in the UAAP Season 76 softball tourney at the Rizal Memorial Stadium yesterday.

Bernardino blasted UP hurler Angelica Palacol’s first pitch over the left field fence to spark a three-run binge in the sixth inning that sparked the Lady Falcons’ breakaway. The AdU belles are now 8-0 this season and 42-0 overall dating back to Season 72.

It was the fourth round-tripper for the power-hitting Bernardino this year.

Embudo unleashed her own four-bagger immediately after, slamming a 1-1 delivery to nearly the same area to make it a 3-0 count. Julie Marie Muyco stretched AdU’s lead to four runs later in the inning with her RBI single .

Meanwhile, second-running University of Santo Tomas bounced back from a two-run deficit to hack out a 4-3 squeaker over University of the East.

After yielding two runs in the first three innings, the Tigresses put together four runs in the next three to storm to their fifth straight win and 6-1 overall.

The Thomasians evened things up with two error-aided runs in the fourth, then grabbed the lead in the next when Jocelyn Ungsod doubled home Kristine Joy Lacupa. Jonalie Almonia hiked it to 4-2 in the sixth on a fielding error.

In the other game, La Salle nipped Ateneo, 7-0. The Lady Archers improved to 2-6 for sixth spot, one win behind joint No. 5 Lady Warriors and Lady Maroons (3-5), while the Lady Eagles dropped to 1-7.
