Adamson, NU chessers join Archers at helm

MANILA, Philippines - Adamson University and National University toppled their respective rivals to join De La Salle in the lead after two rounds of men’s play in UAAP Season 76 chess at the De La Salle Enrique Razon Sports Center over the weekend.

La Salle, which placed third last season, opened its campaign with identical 3-1 victories over defending champion University of Santo Tomas and Ateneo for six points.

The Soaring Falcons, the season hosts, beat the University of the Philippines and former titlist Far Eastern University sides on 3-1 scores to likewise collect six points.

Not to be outdone, the Bulldogs fashioned out 3-1 victories over the Blue Eagles and the Growling Tigers for a six-point output after two rounds.

In women’s play, four-peat seeking De La Salle grabbed the early lead by trouncing FEU, 3-1, and Adamson, 3-1, for six points. UST is in second place with 5.5 points, followed by NU with five points in third place.

The Tigresses routed the Lady Warriors, 3.5-.5 in the opening round and battled the Lady Maroons to a 2-2 draw.

Meanwhile, three-time defending champions Adamson and NU clash today as second round hostilities in softball get going at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

The Lady Falcons – 6-0 this season and 40-0 in three years – and the Lady Bulldogs collide at 11 a.m. after the 9 a.m. match between Ateneo (1-5) and UE (2-4). De La Salle (1-5) and UP (2-4) duel at 1 p.m.

First-round action in volleyball ends today at the Arena in San Juan with the men’s matches between UST and Ateneo at 8:30 a.m. and De La Salle and Adamson University at 10 a.m. and the women’s games between UE and De La Salle at 2 p.m. and Adamson and FEU at 4 p.m.
