The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Philippine Merchant Marine School clamped down on defense in the last five minutes as it pulled off a 62-49 victory over Rizal Technological University yesterday at the start of the 21st National Capital Region Athletic Association (NCRAA) men’s basketball tournament at the Philsports Arena in Pasig City.

The Mariners held the Blue Thunder to just two points in the last 5:33 to fashion out the surprise rout with Dan Reverente leading PMMS attack with 26 points.

The 6-2 Reverente took charge in the second half, scoring eight points late in the third as the Mariners turned a 33-38 deficit into a 46-40 lead.

Meanwhile, newcomer St. Clare leaned on Dennis Santos and Jayson Ibay’s three charities to upset defending champion Olivarez College, 70-67, in the event backed by Mikasa and Molten balls.
