MANILA, Philippines - Team Score, composed of guest players, defeated an all-star squad of Team Solar, 21-17, 17-21, 21-15, 21-7, yesterday but the biggest winners were the fans who trooped to the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig yesterday to take part in a charity event held for super typhoon Yolanda survivors.
It was the second fund-raiser organized by the Philippine Super Liga for the Yolanda survivors. The PSL and the organizing SportsCore donated all proceeds of its opening game to the typhoon victims’ fund last month through the City of San Juan led by Mayor Guia Gomez.
Using their advantage in height and power, Team Score banked on American import Savannah Noyes, who plays for PLDT-MyDSL. Score was coached by actor-sportsman Richard Gomez.
Former Ateneo Lady Eagles star Fille Cainglet was the guest coach of Team Solar.
Proceeds from tickets and sale of other merchandise like shirts, jerseys and federation bibs will be donated to the Philippine Red Cross.
Japanese national team skipper Saori Kimura’s uniform was the hottest jersey in the charity auction side event. It was sold at a whopping P30,000.
A mini bidding war ensued between Michelle Datuin of Cignal HD and Aiza Maizo of Cagayan Valley to the delight of the crowd. Even Gomez, who assisted in the auction, joined the fray in bidding for P25,000 but the multi-awarded actor and athlete as well as Datuin, were eventually beaten by the P30,000-bid of Maizo, who acted as bidding agent for Alcala, Cagayan Mayor and Cagayan Valley team owner Criselda Antonio-Pua, who placed her bid via a phone call.
Five Thai national team jerseys were also auctioned off and sold for P10,600 total while four federation bibs cashed in P2,050.
