Horseowner urges probe on Pres Cup

MANILA, Philippines - The interest of the “Bayang Karerista” and the safety of both horse and jockey of primary concerns, the man behind champion horse Hagdang Bato is urging for a formal investigation on the issue surrounding the malfunctioning of the starting gate that doomed the Triple Crown winner in his bid in the 41st Presidential Gold Cup last week at the San Lazaro Leisure and Business Park in Carmona, Cavite.

Hagdang Bato owner Mandaluyong City Mayor Benhur Abalos recently wrote and sent a letter to the Philippine Racing Commission, host Manila Jockey Club Inc., and sponsoring Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office in an attempt to shed light on the controversy, and at the same time, prevent the incident from happening again in the future.

A fumbling start caused by the stall door swinging back and hitting Hagdang Bato after the gates opened proved too costly in the horse’s bid to become repeat champion. As it turned out, the heavy favorite, ridden by jockey Jonathan Hernandez, finished just fourth in a field of 10 after playing catch-up for the entire 2,000-meter race.

“Without question, the mishap cost our team to lose a shot at glory. But it is not so much because I wish to claim our losses that I bring these to your attention, rather it is my sincere desire that steps should be taken to prevent similar events to happen in the future,” said Abalos in his letter.
