Altas shock Tigers in Martin’s Cup
MANILA, Philippines - University of Perpetual Help dished out a superb game-long effort to stun University of Santo Tomas, 76-71, while Ateneo crushed St. Joseph-Bulacan, 91-36, in the 10th Fr. Martin Collegiate Open Cup basketball tournament at the FEU gym in Morayta last Sunday.
Ardie Dizon, AJ Coronel and Joel Jolangcob stepped up for the Altas, who led by 10, 44-34, at the turn then whisked off the Tigers’ series of rallies to pound out the victory in Group B.
Meanwhile, La Salle drew clutch baskets from Arra Abaca as it walloped FEU, 55-44, in the women’s category.
Eighteen teams are disputing the men’s crown with San Sebastian and Jose Rizal U joining with their B teams.
The Tigers closed within 51-54, at the end of the third but the Altas scored back-to-back baskets to pull away again.
University of the Philippines outlasted FEU, 76-71, in the other Group B action.
The Blue Eagles now share the Group A lead with the Mapua Cardinals, who turned back the San Sebastian Stags, 82-73, last Saturday.
