Mayweather Sr. says Manny not ready for Floyd

MANILA, Philippines – Despite coming off a lopsided victory over Brandon Rios, Manny Pacquiao still isn’t primed for a showdown with Floyd Mayweather Jr.

This is the belief of Mayweather’s father, the equally brash Floyd Sr., when asked if it’s about time to arrange the highly anticipated fight between his son and Pacquiao.

The elder Mayweather recently spoke to fighthype.com’s Ben Thompson, downplaying Pacquiao’s recent win and arguing that his son would have a field day if ever they meet on the ring.

“He (Pacquiao) ain’t ready for that (Floyd fight) yet. Manny ain’t ready for that. He's not ready,” Mayweather Sr. stressed. “He wasn't ready when he was doing it. When he was doing his thing, he wasn't ready.”

Floyd Sr., who had a lengthy rift with his son but has since rejoined his corner after patching things up, went on to belittle Pacquiao’s one-sided win over Rios last Sunday at the Cotai Arena in Macau.

“Now with what I just seen the other day, Floyd would do him the same way he did Rios. It wouldn’t be no difference,” he said, brushing off the fact that Pacquiao looked great in battering an overmatched Rios in their 12-round welterweight fight.

“That's not a challenge. I'm being honest with you. I don't see that as being a challenge," he added.

Pacquiao is scheduled to return to the ring in April, eyeing bouts with either Timothy Bradley or Mayweather. He badly needed to win against Rios last Sunday and look good in doing so. The fighting congressman got the job done to get his career back on track.

But it hardly impressed Floyd Sr.

“I don't call that redeeming himself. I'm just saying, I don't think that's going to redeem just to fight somebody like Floyd,” he explained.

A Mayweather-Pacquiao showdown, which may have less luster compared to what it would have two years ago, could still go down as the richest fight in boxing history. But Mayweather Sr. insists a win over Rios isn’t enough to earn Pacquiao a date with his son.

“Maybe (Pacquiao can) go fight (Saul) Alvarez or (Robert) Guerrero. If you whoop one of them, it's time to get it on. I know what he better do if he plans on having any kind of chance, he better whoop one of them,” he said, citing Floyd Jr.’s last two opponents whom he dominated with ease.

His dislike for Pacquiao has never been too obvious.
