Arguelles, Baran cop Bacolod net crowns

MANILA, Philippines - Fernando Arguelles and Karl Baran outlasted their respective rivals to rule their respective divisions in the 2013 Philippine Sports Commission-Philippine Tennis Association Visayas Junior Tennis Championships’ third leg at the Montevista tennis courts in Bacolod City over the weekend.

Arguelles of Bacolod City captured the boys’ 18 and 16-under singles titles while La Carlota City’s Baran took the boys’ singles 14-under crown in the event organized by the Philta vice-president Juanito Cansino Jr. and backed by the PSC and Bacolod City Mayor Monico Puentevella.

Arguelles outplayed Raymart Marcellena of Dumaguete City in boys’ 18-under finals, 6-0, 6-2, then beat Prince Cleo of Bacolod City, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8, in boys’ 16-under finals of the event that drew 155 entries nationwide.

Baran, meanwhile, outlasted Adrian De Hertogh of Bacolod City, 6-3, 6-4, to cop the crown.

In other results, Reynan Mahusay of Bacolod City won over Caesar Fernando Po of Bacolod City, 6-3, 6-4, for the boys’ 12-under plum, while Pete Andre Rodriguez of Bacolod City beat Mika Medina of La Carlota City, 6-4, 6-2, to snare the 10-under unisex title.

In girls’ play, Tony Rose Raymundo copped the 18 and 16-under titles by beating Keanu Flores of La Carlota City, 6-1, 6-2. She also whipped Flores in the 16-under class finals.

Valerie Desoyo of La Carlota City nailed two crowns by defeating Shyryn Salazar of La Carlota City in the finals of girls’ 12-under singles, 6-1, 6-4, and Kiana De Asis of La Carlota City in the finals of girls’ 14-under, 6-3, 6-3.
