Pinay golfers make Thai Open cut

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Amateurs Pauline del Rosario and Princess Superal skied to a pair of 78s in adverse conditions but still made it through the weekend play of the Thailand Ladies Open at the Siam Plantation Golf Club in Pattaya, Thailand yesterday.

They finished their respective rounds early yesterday after the second round play was called off late Friday due to inclement weather with Del Rosario dropping to joint 21st at 150 and Superal slipping to a share of 24th at 151.

“Both Ces and Pau were caught in the worst part of the day (Friday) and they struggled all day with the wind and rain,” said coach Bong Lopez.

Del Rosario and Superal turned in decent rounds on the first day with the former matching par 72 and the latter carding a 73.

Local ace Pavarisa Yoktuan bucked tough conditions and fired a 70 for a 141 as she seized a three-stroke lead over compatriot Kusuma Meechai, who had a 144 after a 73 halfway through the event serving as part of the Ladies Asian Golf Tour.

Pros Cyna Rodriguez and Jayvie Agojo also made the cut but stood too far behind with the former hobbling with a 77 for a 151 and the latter limping with a 78 for a 153.

Superal, coming off a dominating performance at ICTSI LPGT in Baguio, had six bogeys in the first 10 holes but struck with two birdies against two more bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17 for that 78.

Del Rosario, the reigning Junior World champion (13-14), had a three-under card after seven holes but fumbled with three double bogeys and three bogeys to end up with a similar six-over card.

Both players, however, vowed to rebound in the final two rounds of the 72-hole championship which features the region’s leading professionals.
