IT student rolls 300 in Nat’l Open kegfest

MANILA, Philippines - Kenneth Piedad, a 21-year-old IT (Information Technology) student lit up the Sta. Lucia Mall bowling center by shooting a perfect game in the 42nd Philippine International Open tenpin bowling championships at the Sta. Lucia East Grand Mall in Cainta, Rizal Thursday.

A member of MTBA/Phl team and a graduating student of the University of Perpetual Help System in Las Piñas, Piedad sandwiched his 300 with 161 and 223 to move up to third place in Class O men’s singles and sixth in the Open Masters qualifying round.

National bowler Raoul Miranda (MTBA/Phl) and Nicco Olaivar (PBA/Phl) kept the 1-2 spots with 717 and 697, respectively.

With his 300, Piedad is in line to win a P50,000 prize. The amount will be shared if other competitors also roll a perfect game.

Other bowlers who emerged as tournament leaders after Thursday’s action were SLETBA/Phl’s Jeff Chan, TBAM/Prima’s Mar Serac, PBA’s Lynn Tan, sisters Lara and Apple Posadas of PBAP/Bowlmart, TBAM/Phl’s Krizziah Tabora, SLETBA’s Nikko Ko, TBAM/Prima’s Jasha Jaron, TBAM/Prima’s Madeleine Llamas, SLETBA’s Ed Arcega and MTBA’s Rowena Cabas.

Chan, a former national pool member, carded 1521 on 656 in singles, 421 in doubles and 444 in team to overtake TBAM/Prima’s Ivan Malig in Class O all events, Serac tallied 1412 to move past Jesse Cremen (1394) and Adrian Saguinsin (1357) in class A all events while Tan posted 1240 to edge out Nelia Santos (1187) and Cristy Suntay (1177) in class A ladies’ all events.

The Posadas sisters combined for 850 to dislodge Dyan Coronacio and Christelle Peig (756) in Class O ladies’ doubles, Ko submitted 1088 to take over the Graded Masters’ qualifying round from Bernadette Ipapo (894), Jaron shot ahead in ladies’ Associate Masters with 1084 and Llamas assumed the Girls’ Youth Masters lead with 994.

Arcega and Cabas paced the men’s and ladies’ Rookie Masters lead with 1125 and 890.

More than P600,000 are up for grabs in the 15-day kegfest is sanctioned by WTBA and ABF, organized by the Philippine Bowling Congress in cooperation with Sta. Lucia Mall, Boysen Paints, POC, PSC and the PCSO and supported by the University of Perpetual Help System, Richmonde Hotel Ortigas and the National Bowling Tour.
