Sicat sweeps way to Checkmate plum

MANILA, Philippines - Kevin Anthony Sicat of Philippine Science High School scored five points to rule the junior division of the fifth series of the Checkmate year-round chess clinics at the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Manila over the weekend.

Sicat, 16, flashed top form to sweep his five matches in the clinics organized by the Metropolitan Chess Club.

Cheska Dansalan of Divine Light Academy placed second while Jerome Arellano of Sacred Heart Academy-Novaliches and Juan Miguel Katapang of SSC wound up third and fourth, respectively.  

Other age-group winners were Sean Simon dela Cruz (12-under), James Ganotisi and Zachary Africa (10-under), and Cedric Khalel Abris, Elissa Olivares and Lance Almocera (8-under) while Almocera, Abris and Don Arnaldo Dizon topped the Beginners I division; Dela Cruz, Angelo Ordonio and Africa ruled Division 2.

Dansalan and Arellano reigned in Intermediate and Sicat in the Advance class.

A special series starts Nov. 9 at the San Sebastian College-Recoletos Manila, Starmall Edsa Shaw, Starmall Las Piñas, Caloocan and Parañaque.
