Thunder edge Olivarez in Game 1

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Helino Francisco hit a jumper at the buzzer in overtime as Rizal Technological University edged defending champion Olivarez College, 63-61, yesterday in Game One of the 12th Universities and Colleges Athletic Association (UCAA) men’s basketball finals at the Olivarez College gym in Sucat, Parañaque.

The 6-1 Francisco barreled into a crowded lane and sank the game winner, moving the Blue Thunder to within a win from claiming the crown.

Francisco’s basket came after teammates Jopet Quiro and Simon Basilio bungled their earlier attempts.

Quiro showed the way for the Blue Thunder with 17 points, while Francisco scored 16 markers in the cagefest backed by Mikasa and Molten Balls.

The Blue Thunder shoot for the crown tomorrow at the RTU gym in Mandaluyong.

Baser Sackor led the Sea Lions with 12 points, while Jay Alquisalas and Mark Guillen had eight markers apiece.

The Blue Thunder forced the last deadlock at 61 as Francisco scored on a lay-in off a Quiro assist with 51.9 seconds left in the match.

Earlier, Liberian cager John Corneh shot five points for the Sea Lions, including a driving shot against Clarence Singh with 2.2 seconds left, forcing the overtime at 55.
