WNCAA: CEU, PWU, RTU stay in control in WNCAA
MANILA, Philippines - Centro Escolar University, Philippine Women’s University and Rizal Technological University continued to hold sway in the 44th WNCAA tournament as they remained unbeaten in the senior basketball and volleyball competitions.
Regina Agra scored 21 points while Janine Pontejos added 14 markers as defending champion CEU trounced Assumption College, 72-25, while PWU leaned on Richelyn Badajos’ game-high 24 points to whip St. Scholastica’s College, 66-50, at the Chiang Kai Shek gym in Manila last Sunday.
Both CEU and PWU have 4-0 records.
St. Scholastica absorbed its first loss in four starts while Assumption fell to 0-4.
In other seniors matches, RTU improved to 2-2 it downed San Beda College Alabang, 64-47, while host University of Asia and the Pacific finally won after three tries, beating Miriam College, 60-56.
Defending junior champion Miriam dumped St. Jude Catholic School, 74-38, last Saturday for a league-leading 4-0 slate in Junior A while Chiang Kai Shek paces Junior B at 3-0 after an 82-57 victory over De La Salle Zobel.
St. Stephen’s High School tied defending midget champion DLSZ on top at 2-0 as it bested St. Paul College Pasig, 27-6.
In volleyball at the RTU gym in Mandaluyong, last year’s runner-up RTU dominated La Consolacion College Manila, 25-17, 25-16, 25-21, and PWU outclassed Assumption, 25-15, 25-21, 25-14, for 4-0 records. Defending champion CEU thumped St. Scholastica, 25-21, 25-18, 27-25, for a 3-0 card.
Miriam, the defending junior champion, and St. Scholastica share the Junior A lead with 2-0 cards while DLSZ and San Beda are atop the Junior B heap at 3-0.
Defending midget champion DLSZ, Miriam and San Beda have similar 3-0 slates in the country’s only tri-level league for women being supported by Cafe Lupe Antipolo, OneA Family KTV and Sports Bar, Jeunesse, Molten, Mikasa, Goody, MJC Printing Press, Monster Radio RX 93.1, Alpha Insurance and Surety Company and School Bus clothing.
