UE fencer cops silver in Singapore tourney

MANILA, Philippines - University of the East high school junior Divine Romero copped the silver medal in the individual category and led Team Philippines’ silver medal finish in the 14-Under girls foil team event of the Singapore Minime Fencing Championship held July 20-21 at the National Training Centre in Singapore.

Romero, a member of the UAAP defending champion UE girls’ fencing team and most valuable player of the UAAP Season 75,  was fifth overall among 37 competitors.

“Team Philippines, sponsored by Air 21 and UE, defeated every team en route to the finals where it lost to a Singaporean team,” said UE Red Warrior-Fencers head coach Rolando Canlas.

Canlas was lone coach of the youth team, which competed against bets from Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and Hong Kong.

In the Nanjing, China Asian Youth Games held Aug. 16-24, Romero landed 11th out of 23 competitors in the 15-U girls’ foil individual event, while UE high school junior Christian Jhester Concepcion, a member of the UAAP defending champion UE boys’ team, finished 22nd out of 31 competitors in the 15-U boys’ saber individual.
