Army sinks Navy in Shakey's V-League
MANILA, Philippines -- Phl Army flexed its muscle a bit as it sank Phl Navy in a quick, merciless 25-14, 25-12, 25-13, victory to remain unscathed in the Shakey’s V-League Season 10 Open Conference at The Arena in San Juan City Sunday.
Lovelyn Gonzaga, who played college indoor volleyball in Central Phl U in Iloilo City, and Nerissa Bautista took turns by firing 11 hits apiece as the Lady Troopers completed their second straight rout to improve to 2-0 (win-loss).
Army, however, was quicker and a little more determined this time as it disposed Navy in just an hour and nine minutes, eight minutes faster than the former's 71-minute 25-13, 25-22, 25-18 demolition of Air Force last Aug. 25.
Gonzaga, who came to national prominence when she led her CPU team to an impressive three-peat feat in the Nestea Beach Volley Championship including last May in Boracay, was at her elements again as she contributed in every statistics possible.
Aside from unloading eight kills, the pretty, long-limbed Ilonga also uncorked a pair of service aces while helping form the three-woman impenetrable net defense composed of herself, Bautista and Joanne Bunag, who had three blocks.
"I'm just trying to contribute in every way I can to help the team," said Gonzaga.
The Navy Women, spearheaded by Michelle Laborte's nine hits, fell to their second straight defeat.
