54 teams compete in Southern Classic

MANILA, Philippines - The Southern Classic series, a baseball and softball developmental program, kicks off its third season on Aug. 24-25 with a total of 54 boys and girls’ teams seeing action at the Alabang Country Club in Muntinlupa.

Organized by Pureplay Sports Events and presented by Nuvali, Cherifer, Pepsi, Krispy Kreme, International Container Services Inc., Jamba Juice, and the Junior Baseball and Softball Foundation of the Philippines, the four-leg series will feature seven divisions, including the 18-and-under girls’ softball which attracted five teams.

Other baseball divisions are the men’s open (four teams), the 18-and-under boys (five) teams, the 14-and-under boys (five teams), the 12-and-under boys (six teams, the 10-and-under boys (four teams) and the mixed eight-and-under (eight teams).

Meanwhile, the winner in the boys’ 14-and-under class will have a chance to train under the Major League Baseball-China Baseball Program where major league players will act as trainors.

The second leg will be played on Sept. 14-15, also at the Alabang Country Club, while the third leg is set Sept. 28-29 at the Greenfield Sports Field. The series winds up with the Nuvali Cup Champions’ leg, featuring the top teams in the first three legs, on Oct. 12-13 at The Fields-Nuvali I in Sta. Rosa, Laguna.   

Among the schools joining are De La Salle schools in Alabang, Lipa,Greenhills, Antipolo, and Canlubang, Woodrose, Southridge, Ateneo, plus squads from Makati, Alabang, and Bayanan, the Philippine Habagat, and Landscape.
