Chiefs find salvation at foul line, escape Stallions in Fr. Martin Cup
MANILA, Philippines – The Arellano University Chiefs turned to the free throw line up at endgame to put away the Trinity University of Asia Stallions, 69-66, wins last Sunday in the 11th Fr. Martin Division 2 Cup basketball tournament at the Arellano University gym in Legarda, Manila.
Split free throws from Jeriz Ruiz and Brylle Mesa in the last 13.3 seconds left the Chiefs to their second win in four games in Group A.
This put the Chiefs behind the Ateneo Blue Eagles (2-1), the defending champion University of the East Warriors (2-1) and the unbeaten Lyceum Philippines University Pirates (3-0), according to commissioner Robert de la Rosa.
In the junior division, the Arellano University Braves drew 14 points from Mark Tipay in the waylaid the Letran Squires, 68-55.
Trinity High School won over the San Sebastian Staglets, 75-57, for their first triumph in three outings.
The Braves picked up their first win in as many games, while Trinity bounced back from two losses at 1-2.
Meanwhile, De la Rosa said that because of floods and continuous rains over Metro Manila over the last three games, games which are scheduled this Wednesday at the St. Placid gymnasium of the San Beda College-Manila campus have been cancelled.
