Julaton loses via unanimous decision

Joey Villar - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Fil-Am Ana Julaton lost to a younger Celina Salazar via unanimous decision of their 10-round super-bantamweight duel Sunday at the Plaza de Toros in Cancun, Mexico yesterday that saw her chances of getting a title crack nipped in the bud.

The loss sent the 33-year-old Julaton, who is now based in Las Vegas, down to 12-4-1 record including two KOs while the 24-year-old Salazar, who hails from San Antonio, Texas goes up 6-1-2 with a KO.

Julaton fought her first fight in more than a year since Julaton carved out a spectacular first round technical knockout of Abigail Ramos in Yucatan, Mexico in August last year.

Julaton thus failed to have a chance to get back on top after serving as a former two-time World Boxing Organization super-bantamweight champion a few years back.

The Julaton-Salazar bout was part of the undercard of the World Boxing Council super-featherweight title showdown between reigning champion Takashi Miura and challenger Sergio Thompson.

Miura likewise won via unanimous decision to retain the title.

Nicknamed “The Hurricane,” Julaton was hoping to win this Salazar fight since a victory would arrange her a possible title crack against reigning IBF bantamweight champion Yazmin Rivas in September.

It would have been considered to be featured in the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Canelo Alvarez showdown at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Sept. 15.

Sadly, it may not happen at all.
