The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - San Beda College stunned defending champion La Salle Green Hills Team A, 67-64, a duel of unbeaten teams in the SBP-Passerelle twin basketball at Xavier Sports Complex in San Juan City.

The Red Cubs trailed 27-34 at halftime and recovered just in time behind the troika of Evan Heinrich Nelle, Rob Airon Mendoza and Alberto Bordeos to score their second straight win for the solo lead. LSGH dropped to 2-1 in Passerelle division.

Nelle scored 14 points, Mendoza had 11 markers and Bordeos added 10 points for San Beda.

The SBC-La Salle encounter proved to the most exciting as most of the games ended in lopsided fashions.

It was a bad day for La Salle as its Zobel counterpart lost to unbeaten San Beda, 43-61, in SBP C and its Team B bowed to Nazareth School of National University, 56-77, in Passerelle B.

The win was San Beda’s third, tying Marist School Team B in the 18 teams SBP field for players 9-11 years old.

La Salle prevented a shutout as its Team A steamrolled Lourdes of Quezon City, 64-15, for its third straight win in SBP A division and Xavier School Team A recorded its second win in three starts at the expense of Marist School Team A, 45-33, in SBP B.

Lourdes School suffered another defeat as its Mandaluyong counterpart vowed to Ateneo Team B, 46-57, in Passerelle A while Marist School crushed World Christian Academy, 73-44, after taking the half, 42-14, in Passerelle B.

The 28th edition of the country’s longest running basketball competition was organized by Best Center of the Philippines and backed up by Milo and RCBC Savings Bank.
